Osteoarthritis

This chronic condition is characterized by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage. Cartilage is an essential part of the joint; not only does it act as a shock absorber, it also enables the joint to move smoothly. The breakdown of cartilage causes bones to rub against each other resulting in stiffness, pain and loss of joint movement. Osteoarthritis most commonly occurs in the weight-bearing joints of the hips, knees and lower back.
