Discs are the soft, gelatinous cushions that surround the spinal cord and act as shock absorbents between the hard, bony vertebrae. A herniated disc is a protrusion of the disc material, usually through small openings in the vertebrae where nerves enter the spinal column. Discs herniate most commonly in the lower back, although they can occur in the lower neck. A disc may herniate because of sudden trauma such as a fall, or by the long-term effects of too much bending and twisting.
